Fellowship of Freethought PDF Print E-mail

I'd like to welcome the Fellowship of Freethought, which is a new secular organization operating in Dallas, Texas. I have been elected to serve as the Acting Executive Director for this fantastic group of dynamic freethinkers while they pull together all of the logistic, organizational, and communication needs associated with any new enterprise of this sort.

Please check out their website here, and if you're local to Dallas, I would also encourage you to sign up to participate in some of their upcoming events through their Meetup page.

Their mission statement is:

"To create a positive impact on our shared world, our mission is to provide a community that values and promotes a freethinking life unencumbered by the biases of tradition, dogma, and authority and that encourages people to live a reason and evidence-based life characterized by close fellowship, ethical contemplation, critical thinking, community service, and the appreciation of scientific knowledge and understanding of the universe and our place in it."

They also have a new and unique logo, which is explained here:

The Fellowship Pansy - Four petals make up our pansy, representing the different facets of our organization. From the left (clockwise) we begin with Freethought. Atheist, Skeptic, Agnostic, Humanist, non-theist, Bright, or yet uncategorized non-believer, we all have the desire to live a life free of dogma. At the top of our flower is what we think has been missing from many secular organizations and meet-ups to date — Fellowship. It goes beyond socialization. It encompasses outreach, volunteerism, advancing shared goals and enriching the lives of our communities. Although we don't always agree, as freethinkers tend to be opinionated, we think Friendship and respecting each other as individuals, is important. We hope our gatherings allow for the fostering of meaningful relationships between people of like (and sometimes "not so like") minds. Our last petal is the representation of Family — defined by your own situation. We do not judge. We come together as a family, a family of families, with diverse cultures and unique backgrounds. In the center lies a unifying childlike representation of our future. It is owned by all and serves as a reminder that what we do has an impact on those that come after us. Together this union of ideas creates our unique brand of fellowship.

The Chariots of Iron podcast was founded in 2008 to provide a forum which features "news and topical discussions on atheism, humanism, skepticism, science, religious history, scriptural criticism and (of course) wacky religious antics." The hosts consider themselves to be "Atheiskeptihumanists™", and derive the name of their podcast from the first chapter of Judges, which says that:

"And Yahweh was with Judah, who made himself master of the highlands; he could not, however, dispossess the inhabitants of the plain, since they had chariots of iron."

I was a guest on their most recent podcast, and talked extensively about the North Texas Church of Freethought, its founding, and what has made it so successful. The hosts were also very interested in promoting the foundation of new Churches of Freethought throughout the country and even the world. Without a doubt, this is something that the NTCOF supports, and just as we have made it a simple process for a sister church in Houston to organize, we can provide the same assistance to any other individuals who are serious about organizing a Church of Freethought in their area.
